Jordan Pickford has spoken of his pride after being called up to the England senior squad for the first time.
The Washington-born stopper joins an illustrious list of Black Cats to represent the Three Lions, and it comes as the latest boost for the 22-year-old who has enjoyed a breakout season.
Capped numerous times at England under-21 level, Pickford has made seven first-team appearances during the 2016-17 campaign after coming into the side following an injury to Vito Mannone.
Speaking to safc.com the ‘keeper admitted he was honoured by his inaugural call-up and is now keen to work hard to gain more in the future.
“It was a really proud moment for me because I didn’t expect it to be honest,” he said.
“I got the call and I was over the moon. I was at my mum's when I found out so it was special.
“It was really, really good to be within the camp and experience that kind of spirit at international level.
“That’s where I want to be somewhere down the line. I want to be in that squad as much as I can but I have got to keep working hard at Sunderland.
“I know it’s important to keep playing well and put the performances in so hopefully I can do that and somewhere down the line more chances will come.”
He continued: “It was great to link up with Gareth (Southgate) who I know from my time with the under-21s.
“He is a great coach, he has always spoken well to me and he has helped me a lot.”
