EFL Cup: Moyes eyes cup progression

David Moyes is eyeing a place in the EFL Cup quarter-finals ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Southampton.

The Black Cats have suffered south-coast blues in recent times with Saints striking late on in consecutive seasons to deny the Black Cats worthy wins.

But a change of competition can usher in a change of fortune according to Moyes, and he’s set his sights on victory against Claude Puel’s side who have suffered just one defeat in their last nine games.

“Getting good results and performances can lead to better things.

“I think our performances have been improving and I think we’ve been getting closer to winning – think the players the staff feel that’s the case – so we will keep plugging at it.

“I’ve been impressed by Southampton,” continued Moyes. “I think a lot of people have and outside the top three or four they’re probably the team a lot of people are talking about at the moment.

“Rightly so, but this a cup game and we move onto a different competition, so we will use it as a change from the league and we’ve had a couple of good wins in earlier rounds.

“We want to try and get through again."
