EFL Trophy preview: Hartlepool United v Sunderland

Sunderland head to Hartlepool United as they resume their Checkatrade Trophy campaign at Victoria Park tonight (KO 7.30pm).

Placed in Group F, the Black Cats take on local side Hartlepool after travelling to Rochdale last month to begin their journey in the competition.

Elliot Embleton scored early in the second period to give Sunderland a deserved lead, but Ian Henderson equalised and that forced the game to a penalty shootout which saw the hosts win 4-2.

However, the Black Cats youthful side undoubtedly gained bags of experience and they will be keen to make amends this time round against the League Two opposition.

Manged by Craig Hignett, Hartlepool have enjoyed an upturn in form in recent weeks, putting together an unbeaten run of five games.

Currently 13th in the table, Hignett’s side recorded a seismic 3-0 victory at play-off chasers Grimsby to solidify their place in the middle of the league.

Sunderland, meanwhile, will field a blend of youth and experience with Stockdale confirming that Billy Jones could feature.

The first-team coach also revealed that other members of David Moyes’ squad could feature, while hailing the importance of the competition for the club’s under-23s as they aim to gather valuable experience.

Football League rules state that Sunderland must field six players who are 21 or under in their starting XI.

The match marks the first competitive meeting between Sunderland and Hartlepool since January 3, 2004 when Julio Arca scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win in the Emirates FA Cup.

Prices for the game are just £10 for adults and £5 for under-19s and can be purchased at Victoria Park.
