International round-up: Gooch makes senior debut, Watmore scores

Lynden Gooch – USA 1-1 New Zealand

Lynden Gooch made his senior debut as USA were held to a 1-1 draw in a friendly against New Zealand.

The Sunderland man came off the bench with 59 minutes on the clock, with former Black Cat Jozy Altidore setting up USA’s opener which was converted by Julian Green.

Monty Patterson levelled on 72 minutes but it took little gloss off a memorable day for Gooch.

Jordan Pickford – Slovenia 0-0 England

Jordan Pickford was an unused substitute on his first senior call-up as England drew 0-0 in Slovenia.

Former Black Cat Jordan Henderson captained the Three Lions.

Duncan Watmore England U21 5-0 Bosnia & Herzegovina

Duncan Watmore found the net as England’s U21s romped past Bosnia & Herzegovina in Walsall.

Reading’s John Swift opened the scoring before on-loan Bristol City forward Tammy Abraham added a second, with Tottenham’s Josh Onomah striking before Watmore added a fourth.

Abraham completed the scoring for the under-21s who were managed by Aidy Boothroyd.

Joel Asoro – Sweden U21 4-2 Croatia

Joel Asoro was sent off late on as Sweden’s under-21 side defeated Croatia.

The Sunderland striker picked up a second yellow card with just two minutes remaining, but overall if was a positive trip for the 17-year-old who scored his first goal at this level against Estonia on Saturday.

Victory for the Swedes ensured they qualified for next summer’s European Championships.

Paddy McNair – Germany 2-0 Northern Ireland

Paddy McNair was a second-half substitute for Northern Ireland as Germany secured a 2-0 win in Hannover.

Julian Draxler and Sami Khedira netted in the opening 45 minutes for the world champions, meaning Ireland are third in the group on four points from three games.

Wahbi Khazri – Tunisia 2-0 Guinea

Wahbi Khazri featured as Tunisia were 2-0 winners over Guinea in Group A in Monastir.

Second-half goals from Aymen Abdennour and Ahmed Akaichi gave the North Africans a victory which puts them second in the group, behind the Democratic Republic of Congo who beat Libya 4-0 on Saturday.

Didier Ndong – Gabon 0-0 Morocco

Didier Ndong played 76 minutes as Gabon were held to a goalless draw against Morocco.

Gabon, who boast Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, failed to break the deadlock as their opening World Cup qualifier ended level.
