International round-up: Asoro scores, Gooch prepared

Three Sunderland players were on international duty last night while another three could feature tonight for their respective nations.

Here’s a rundown of what happened last night:

John O’Shea – Republic of Ireland 1-0 Georgia

John O’Shea came on as a late substitute as Seamus Coleman’s first international goal gave Ireland a narrow victory over Georgia in their 2018 World Cup qualifier.

The Everton man struck in the 56th minute after a strong run down the wing saw him cut inside before his effort deflected in.

The result means the Irish have four points from their opening two game and sit fourth on goal difference.

Joel Asoro – Estonia U21 0-3 Sweden U21

Joel Asoro scored as Sweden romped to a 3-0 win over Estonia in their U21 European qualifier.

Filip Dagerstal broke the deadlock inside nine minutes before Muamer Tankovic doubled the visitors lead moments before the break.

Sweden continued to pile forward after the midway interval and Asoro added a third on the volley in the 53rd minute.

Duncan Watmore – Kazakhstan U21 0-1 England U21

Duncan Watmore came off the bench as England booked their place at next summer’s European Championships with a game to spare.

Leicester City’s Demarai Gray scored the game’s only goal after just six minutes as he side-footed home Nathan Redmond’s low cross.

England’s final group game will be on Tuesday, 11 October when the young Lions host Bosnia Herzegovina in Walsall.

Who could be in line to play tonight?

Lynden Gooch – Cuba v USA

Lynden Gooch could make his senior USA debut tonight as the American’s head to Cuba in their history-making friendly match.

The 20-year-old has been training with the USA team in Miami and will head to Havana, Cuba, this evening for the first friendly between the two nations since 1947.

The game will be held at the Estadio Pedro Marrero in Havana.

Jason Denayer – Montenegro U21 v Belgium U21

Jason Denayer will be keen to feature as Belgium look to cement their top two place in group one of their European qualifiers.

Belgium have won their last two games but will be mindful their last defeat came when they hosted Montenegro in March.

Elliot Embleton – Sweden U18 v England U18

Elliot Embleton will be hoping to gain some more minutes under his belt as England face Sweden tonight.

It’s the first of two quickfire meetings between the nations as they will face each other again two days later.
