Pickford: Victory can ignite our season

Sunderland’s victory at AFC Bournemouth can provide the catalyst for a run of form, according to Jordan Pickford.

The Black Cats stopper believes their victory over the Cherries can ignite their season, and has paid homage to the Lads’ steely grit and determination to come from behind and seal a vital three points.

While Dan Gosling’s goal looked to have sent Eddie Howe’s side on their way to 13 points from a possible 18 at home this season, goals from Victor Anichebe and Jermain Defoe turned the game on its head as 10-men Sunderland secured three points.

Speaking to safc.com prior to his call-up to the England national squad, Pickford admitted he is hopeful the confidence gained from the three points can kick start the Lads’ season.

“We’re over the moon with it because we stuck together as a team from front to back,” he said.

“We were top drawer as a unit and it just shows how we were willing to have the grit and determination to not concede another goal.

“We were always going to be under the cosh going down to 10 men given their momentum but we made blocks, made saves and then JD (Jermain Defoe) finished off a penalty.

“We dug in as a team again, kept the goals out and got the win,” he continued.

“When we get back it will be straight back on the training pitch because we need to go again and get our first home win of the season against Hull City.”
