Silencing the Reds: O'Shea striving to add to '07 memories

Imagine the scene, 91 minutes played and its 0-0 between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield with Cristiano Ronaldo stood over a 25-yard free-kick.

Bang, goal. But it’s not quite how you’d think.

The game, which took place in March 2007, wasn’t won by Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney or Henrik Larsson who was enjoying a loan spell with the Red Devils, it was won by John O’Shea who buried the ball from close range to send United on their way to the title.

O’Shea, 35, is a familiar foe to Liverpool having played his part as Manchester United dominated English football under Sir Alex Ferguson, often at the Reds’ expense.

And on Saturday the Republic of Ireland international is out to break Anfield hearts again as Sunderland head to Merseyside.

“The new stand has been built and they say the atmosphere and volume has increased so hopefully we can keep it quiet.

“Definitely [2007 is the moment that sticks out], but the atmosphere in general is always very good and they get right behind their team, giving the away team as much stick as possible so when I was there with my former team there was a little extra on that volume.

“I have some good memories amd I also remember a reaction I got when I made what could have been my league debut a long time ago – I got a ‘nice’ response from the fans,” grinned O’Shea.

“It’s one of those grounds you love going to because of the history there and that will be no different this weekend.

“The spirit from the boys to dig out the two wins has been fantastic, particularly down at Bournemouth with ten men, and we know that if we keep clean sheets and create chances the boys up top will cause teams problems.

“Liverpool will be fully aware of that too.”
