David Moyes believes his players produced a performance fit for a king as Sunderland royally beat Hull City at the Stadium of Light on Charlie Hurley Day.

The club’s Player of the Century received a rousing ovation pre-match along with his 1963-64 team-mates and that set a joyous tone for the day.

On an emotionally-charged afternoon, Jermain Defoe scored his 150th Premier League goal to get the Lads on their way to victory in the first half.

But while a 10-minute floodlight failure forced play to be halted in the second period, Jordan Pickford come to the fore when play resumed as he made a string of fine stops to preserve Sunderland’s slender advantage.

Pickford's inspired form drove the Lads forward, and Victor Anichebe slammed the ball home on 61 minutes and then again on 84 minutes as the Lads secured their first home win of the campaign.

Speaking post-match, Moyes shared his delight at his players king-like performance to secure back-to-back wins.

It’s good to be using the word ‘another’ as we’ve got another win today, let’s hope we’re using it more often,” he said.

“We need to get another win on the board just as quickly. I’m delighted with the result today; back-to-back wins is something for us to build in and help us grow in confidence.

“Both strikers were on the scoresheet, we got a clean sheet; it’s been a good day."

He continued: “It was a performance fit for a King; Charlie Hurley was in attendance and we have to be playing as well as his team did back in the day and we can hope to be as successful as his team.

“We’ve made a start, but it’s only a start, we have to go away and build on that now.”
