Defoe: Striker optimistic ahead of new campaign

Jermain Defoe believes the blueprints for success are in place ahead of the 2016-17 Premier League season.

The prolific forward enjoyed a sensational campaign scoring 18 goals in all competitions, with each and every strike worth their weight in gold as Sam Allardyce steered Sunderland clear of the drop zone.

But Defoe’s far from done and after penning a new deal with the club on Thursday he immediately set his sights on success during the new campaign.

“I’m delighted. When you feel at home as a player you want to be offered a new deal and when it’s finally done it’s a great feeling.

“The manager said in the papers towards the end of the season that I’m 33 but I’m like a young 33, so it’s good and I’ve always looked after myself which I showed in my performances and the minutes I played.”

He continued: “I’m already looking forward to the new season and I’ve already set myself challenges.

“I’ve committed myself to a great football club; last season was my first full season so to score as many goals as I did was a dream.

“I played in a good team and some good signings came in January which allowed us to finish the season strongly, so signing a new deal and playing in a good team, especially under this manager, means we can have a good season next year.”
