While a third place finish would usually be herald a huge success in Tottenham Hotspurs’ books, the 2015-16 Premier League left them thinking what might have been as their unlikely title bid faded from their grasp.

However, after missing out on a top four finish the year before by six points, Mauricio Pochettino worked his magic in the close season and moulded a young exciting side for the next campaign which managed to more than bridge that gap.

With the youngest average age of any other squad in the top-flight, Spurs went into battle and enjoyed a marvellous run which saw them compete for the Premier League title along with Leicester City.

Victories over Manchester City and Manchester United helped their cause before a home draw against West Bromwich Albion dented their title bid.

The final blow came when Spurs surrendered a 2-0 lead at Chelsea and that handed the title to the Foxes for the first time in their history.

With the new season now less than a month away, Spurs have already been busy in the transfer market and have gone about adding further steel to their ranks.

Combative midfielder Victor Wanyama has joined from Southampton while Dutch forward Vincent Janssen provides competition up front alongside last season’s Premier League top scorer Harry Kane.

Sunderland fell to two defeats against Spurs last term as they sealed UEFA Champions League qualification.

Ryan Mason scored the game’s only goal at the Stadium of Light in September 2015 before the return fixture saw Spurs come from behind to record a 4-1 victory at the start of 2016.
