Pre-season: En-route to Austria

Sunderland will ramp up their Premier League preparations today when the first team travel to Austria.

The team left the north east on Thursday morning bound for an intensive training camp, after which they will return to the UK to face Hartlepool United and Rotherham United in their only domestic friendlies.

A scintillating end to the previous campaign has ensured spirits are high at the Academy of Light with players and coaches alike relishing the new season, and their initial training camp will form a key part of their preparations.

The likes of Vito Mannone, Younes Kaboul, Jan Kirchhoff and Jermain Defoe will all travel to Austria, with the players who took part in summer internationals, including John O’Shea and Seb Larsson, joining the group at a later date.

As well as taking on Hartlepool and Rotherham United, Sunderland will also play three games in France taking on FC Stade Nyonais, Djion FCO and Montpellier HSC.

The Black Cats’ final pre-season outing will take place on Friday 5 August against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.
