Preview: Stockdale calls for the very best

Robbie Stockdale believes Sunderland will have to produce their best football if they are going to progress in the Checkatrade Trophy on Monday evening.

The Black Cats advanced to the knockout stages after finishing second in northern group F undefeated with two wins from three matches.

Victory over Notts County last month at the Stadium of Light secured Sunderland’s place in round two after two goals in the final 10 minutes from Josh Maja and an own goal from Haydn Hollis turned the game in the Lads’ favour.

While at one stage it looked that Stockdale’s side might be knocked out of the competition, the first-team coach has reiterated the Lads’ intent in the competition ahead of their trip to Molineux.

Speaking to safc.com, Stockdale also admitted he is savouring the challenge and believes it will require the very best from the Black Cats young crop of players.

“We are expecting nothing but a difficult match and it will be interesting to see what side’s line up for both teams,” he said.

“Our young lads are in decent form and I have watched all the games I have been able to get to and I know the group very well.

“We will be going there confident but ultimately knowing if we don’t perform we will be knocked out.

“We needed to get a result out of the game so you could argue the last group game was like a bit of a knockout situation for us.

“It’s good for us and it’s good that we are undefeated after 90 minutes so far in the competition,” he continued.

“It will certainly be a good chance for both sides to progress, it all depends on the night but we want to progress.”
