Flying Dutchman: PvA on important victory

Patrick van Aanholt has hailed the value of three points and the feel good factor they bring.

Sunderland clinched a narrow, yet very welcome, victory on Saturday over Watford to leave Black Cat fans purring going into the Christmas period.

With three wins from their last four home matches, David Moyes’ side have moved within a point of Crystal Palace ahead of their trip to Manchester United.

And van Aanholt, whose second-half strike secured a priceless three points for the Lads, paid tribute his players’ efforts, admitting it was a colossal win on the back of two straight defeats..

“It was a must win game, that’s what the gaffer told us before kick-off,” he said.

“We got out there and at half-time we still had a clean sheet and a couple of chances.

“The gaffer told us to keep going and that the chances would fall – thankfully they did and I was able to score.

“We always have to battle and I think we did a good job today, we kept a clean sheet and that has won us the game – thankfully we got the three points,” he continued.

“Sometimes you have got to just win games and so against Watford that was important, but now we have to move onto the next one.”
