Interview: O'Shea eyes Christmas surprise

John O’Shea is keen to make it a Christmas to remember as Sunderland dream of an historic double over Manchester United.

Last season saw Sunderland produced a monstrous display on Wearside as goals from Wahbi Khazri and Lamine Kone earned the Black Cats a 2-1 win.

That win proved to be the catalyst for the Lads to claw their way to safety, and now O’Shea is keen for a repeat performance to give David Moyes’ side some festive cheer in the hope a similar feat can be achieved this season.

Speaking to safc.com, the 35-year-old admitted it’s going to be an extremely tough match as the Black Cats take on a Manchester United side bidding to extend their winning run to five straight matches.

“They are tough games but they are games that we know we can get something from if we stick together and produce the kind of performance we know we can,” he said.

“Hopefully we can get one or two bodies back to help out because we are at that time of the season when we need to freshen things up at different stages.

“Manchester United have hit a decent run of form and seem to have settled on a certain starting XI.

“They have had a decent run of form and are looking threatening but we know we can give them a game even though it’s always going to be tough when you go to Old Trafford."

He continued: “We will be hopeful we can cause them problems.”
