Together: O'Shea hails team ethic

John O’Shea has highlighted the importance of Sunderland’s togetherness ahead of Monday’s trip to Old Trafford.

Like the Black Cats, Manchester United head into the Boxing Day clash with their tails up as they look to maintain their form.

Victory for David Moyes’ side last weekend over Watford, brought an end to a miserable run of two straight defeats and rekindled the winning mentality that was harnessed in November following wins over AFC Bournemouth, Hull City and champions Leicester City.

But Sunderland head to Manchester knowing they will be up against it from the first whistle, with Jose Mourinho’s star-studded side looking to make it five straight wins.

However, former United defender O’Shea has hailed the value of the Black Cats’ passion and commitment to the cause as they look to give the Red Devils a hard afternoon.

“We know if we want to stay in the Premier League we are going to have to grind out results,” he said.

“Your 1-0 wins and clean sheets are crucial and the more of them we can get the better.

“It is a good sign maybe when you haven’t played too well but to get a 1-0 win is fantastic.”

He continued: “Watford are a good side, the team they have are talented but we were able to keep them quiet and thankfully we got the win.

“We need to take that forward with us because that ability to grind results out speaks volumes about our battling spirit.”
