How's stat?: Saturday's Opta preview

Sunderland will usher in 2017 with a trip to Burnley where they will be hoping to build on a positive record against Burnley.

The Black Cats have only lost once to the Clarets in the Premier League and that defeat came way back in 2009, as David Nugent scored twice after coming off the bench in a 3-1 win.

That defeat is Sunderland’s only loss to Burnley in the last 18 meetings between the sides (W10 D7 L1).

David Moyes has lauded the importance of clean sheets, and rightly so, and he will be hoping for a repeat of the 2014-15 meetings between the two sides which saw Sunderland’s defence unbreached.

If the Lads keep a third successive clean sheet against the Clarets on Saturday, it would be the first time they've done so on three successive occasions since 1895.

Burnley, however, will also head into the contest with good omens on their side.

Sean Dyche’s side haven’t ended a calendar year with a defeat since 2012 and they’ve notched an incredible points total at home this season, with 19 of their 20 PL points coming at Turf Moor.

Only Tottenham Hotspur (7) and Chelsea (8) have won more Premier League home games than the Clarets this season (6).

But, as so often is the case, Jermain Defoe will look to have the final say and end a stunning 2016 on a high with his 20th PL goal of the calendar year.

Away from home, he’s played a part in 80% of Sunderland’s goals this season.
