Talking points: Managers have their say post Watford

David Moyes and Walter Mazzarri react to Sunderland's 1-0 win over Watford on Saturday.

The end result

Moyes: “I’m thrilled to get the win because I knew it was really important for the players, the club and for us to stay in touch. There were bits of it which weren’t as nice as I would like it but there was lots of resilience, we stuck at it and we had lots of good bits of attacking play. We had some good defending and some good not so good. Overall, I’m thrilled we got three points – a really important three points.

Mazzarri: “The main reason is because of the way we are playing, we can’t keep missing all the chances we are creating. We know that in the Premier League if we continue to miss chances then we will get punished and this is what happened against Sunderland.

Injuries, injuries & injuries

Moyes: “We have probably shown a lot of fight in many games, there has been the odd game, but we know we needed all the players together, the small group that we’ve got from the staff, the supporters and everyone to give us a chance. We have always had a good siege mentality within the club. I think we need the crowd to be with us all the way.”

Mazzarri: “Maybe the players were ok, they did their preparations with us and unfortunately some picked up knocks in fouls during the game. Maybe the way we are training hasn’t helped us either.”

Form & festive spirit

Moyes: “We have had over 40,000 here again and there are very few football clubs who can say that. As long as the crowd are with us then we always have a big chance. It’s big because we have got back in contact. We have won three of our last four home games and that sounds better. It’s more like what you hope you would get at home and if we can keep that sort of record between now and the end of the season then it will give us a great chance of being a Premier League club.”

Mazzarri: “I see the performances, not so much the result, and the way we play. Of course it is something we need to improve and we need to score. All the other teams I see when they get to the area and in the final 20 meters they manage to score, nearly on every occasion. We don’t do that. It’s something we need to work on.”
