Preview: van Aanholt eyes cup win

Patrick van Aanholt is aiming for a winning week ahead of games against Shrewsbury Town and Southampton.

The Black Cats entertain the Shrews in the EFL Cup on Wednesday evening before heading to St Mary’s on Saturday, with the Dutchman looking to pick up back-to-back wins after a tough start to the campaign.

On Sunday the Lads fell to a narrow defeat, as they did on the opening day, with van Aanholt frustrated that a positive display went unrewarded at the Stadium of Light.

However, he’s refusing to dwell and speaking to safc.com the defender demanded focus ahead of a busy week.

“Our main focus is on Shrewsbury Town,” said van Aanholt. “It is a cup game and all we have to do is win.

“If we do that we will carry on to Southampton and hopefully keep a winning streak going.”

He continued: “We can play; we showed that in the second half against Middlesbrough and in the first half on a couple of occasions, so we just have to do it and be confident.

“We started well on Sunday putting them under pressure and even though they scored a nice goal we carried on, but then they scored again just before half-time.

“At the break we went into the dressing room, got together and said let’s play like we always play, and then we dominated the game and after getting back into it we were unlucky not to get another goal.”
