Point on the board: Gooch on Saints stalemate

Lynden Gooch hailed Sunderland’s opening point of the Premier League season following a 1-1 draw with Southampton.

For the second time in two seasons the Black Cats were denied three points on the south coast, with Jay Rodriguez’s late strike sneaking under Jordan Pickford and into the net.

However, overall it was a positive afternoon for David Moyes’ side who registered their first point on the board, and after a testing start to the season Gooch is looking forward to the rest of the campaign.

“Everyone put in a shift and after getting the goal we were a little unlucky, but we will take the point because it was a tough game and tough place to play against a good team.

“It was a positive performance with loads of energy and everyone worked their socks off, so we were unlucky not to get the three points.”

He continued: “It was tough playing three games in six days but I put everything into it for as long as I could and was happy to get our first point on the board.

“It was important to get our first point because the longer it goes on the more pressure you’re under, so now we’ve got it on the board we can build on it.”
