Interview: Defoe relishing derby-day

Jermain Defoe was in a positive frame of mind following Sunderland’s late defeat at Manchester City on Saturday.

The Black Cats were just minutes away from sealing an impressive point against a star-studded City outfit on the opening day of the season, but a late own goal by Paddy McNair saw Pep Guardiola’s side snatch three points.

On Sunday a famous rivalry will resume as Middlesbrough travel to Wearside for a highly-anticipated Wear-Tees derby, but Defoe is quietly confident ahead of the mouth-watering encounter.

“I thought we played well,” said the England international. “If we continue to play like that and show the same spirit I think we’ll have a good season.

“We have a derby this weekend and those games are like cup finals so I’m looking forward to that and I’m sure the fans are, but it’s important we get three points.”

Defoe also reserved special praise for Sunderland debutant Lynden Gooch, hailing the youngster’s athleticism and performance in tough circumstances.

“Duncs has been involved and done well after he burst on the scene last season, but Gooch came in and he was fantastic.

“He’s strong, he’s got legs and he didn’t look at all fazed or nervous, and it’s a massive game to come into so you’ve thrown him in the deep end but he’s performed.”
