Middlesbrough: Bally's ones to watch

Victor Valdes

One of the players you immediately look out for, subconsciously or deliberately, will be Victor Valdes purely because of the outstanding performances and success he’s had throughout his career. I was reading up what he’s won and you’ll all be well aware because what’s he’s done is phenomenal. Yes, you have to take into the account the clubs and teams his played in but as a former player and manager I’m really looking forward to watching him play in our league. He’s in a new league now and people often say they want to see if these top, top players who win major trophies can perform at the opposite end of the division, and we’re about to find out. I’m a big believer that an excellent goalkeeper can not only win you leagues but also keep you in them, and I’m not saying that’s going to be the case but as I said I’m really looking forward to watching how he deals with what comes at him.

Gaston Ramirez

I’ve read multiple reports about Gaston Ramirez and how he plays; he’s going to be the conductor and he’s going to be the one who will do something different and tries to control the tempo of the game. He can be inventive and make things happen so he’s a player we need to watch out for. I wouldn’t say he has a point to prove but he will now have a better understanding of where he is and what he needs to do to succeed in the Premier League.

Alvaro Negredo

Alvaro Negerdo’s hold-up play and physicality will be key but he’s not just the ‘beast’ like his nickname suggests, and his game does have another side to it. He’s a proven centre forward both in the Premier League and during his time in Spain. Boro also have options with Jordan Rhodes, whose always scores goals, and David Nugent likely to feature at some point.

Steward Downing

Stewart Downing will also want to come up here and impress being a Boro boy. The fans will be intrigued to see a player whose been at our club and compare him from then to now. He has fantastic qualities and great ability so he will have been delighted by last season, and I think it showed great resilience that he returned there and won promotion.
