As Wearside held its collective breath one man stayed ice cool from the spot.

Fabio Borini’s first-half penalty shattered the deadlock at Carrow Road leaving Norwich City shell-shocked at the break, and the Italian continued to heap misery on the Canaries in the second period setting up Jermain Defoe for the Black Cats’ second.

Substitute Duncan Watmore completed the scoring late on to wrap up an immensely satisfying afternoon for the Lads, and speaking post-match Borini admitted it is good to be back to winning ways.

“It’s good to be back to winning ways because in the last few games we’ve deserved it but it just didn’t come,” said Borini.

“Today we showed we are the Sunderland and we can win away from home and secure victories to get closer to our objectives.

“People know when I take penalties I’m confident I’ll score and today was the same; after the tackle people might have thought I would come off for treatment, but there was no chance now we had a chance like that.”

He added: “Luckily I gave us the lead but the clean sheet was the main thing because it helped us get the victory.

“We showed we can do the ugly parts of the game and we defended well and were solid, and the subs came in at the same intensity giving us extra legs and pace on the break.”
