The first-team are back in training and with the Barclays Premier League curtain-raiser with West Bromwich Albion just one month away, spirits are high at the Academy of Light.

Players old and new are buzzing to back in training ahead of the new season and safc.com visited the club’s training ground to catch up with Billy Jones and Steven Fletcher ahead of the new campaign.

First up in front of the mic was new signing Jones, who will return to his former club when the Black Cats take on the Baggies on Saturday 16th August.

The defender spent three years at The Hawthorns before joining Gus Poyet’s side on a free transfer during the summer and the 27-year-old already feels settled on Wearside.

“Things are going great,” said Jones. “All the lads have returned in good shape and we look strong.

“You can see that there is a great team spirit here and a good group.

“Everyone is willing to work hard and with the signs I’m seeing I’m sure it will be a successful season.”

safc.com also caught up with Steven Fletcher, who was unable to hide his excitement after returning to training ahead of the 2014-15 season.

“It’s been a hard week but I’m glad to be back and it’s good to be training again, especially because I was out for so long last season," he said.

“I’ve seen some of the lads over the summer for a few games of golf but it’s good to get everyone back together and get the banter going again.”
