Pre-season countdown under way.

Plenty of hard work lies ahead for Gus Poyet’s squad, who will report back to the Academy of Light this weekend.

The players will undergo fitness testing on Saturday before training gets under way in earnest on Monday.

New signings Billy Jones, Jordi Gomez and Costel Pantilimon officially became Sunderland players on July 1 and are set to meet their new team-mates for the first time.

The whole squad will be reporting with the exception of Jozy Altidore, who will be given some extra time away following his involvement in the United States’ World Cup campaign.

On Monday, Sunderland will be 13 days away from their first pre-season friendly – at Darlington on July 19.

After then taking on Carlisle and Hartlepool, the squad will fly out to Portugal for a warm-weather training camp.

The U21 and U18 sides are also set to return to training, with the club’s new intake of first-year scholars having arrived at the start of the week.
