Cuellar steps up comeback

Carlos returns to light training after injury.

Carlos Cuellar has stepped up his comeback from injury by joining his team-mates for training at the Academy of Light.

The 32-year-old has played only four times this season and hasn’t featured since the defeat in Hull in early November.

But he has now taken the next step in his rehabilitation and will now focus on further increasing his fitness before becoming available for senior duty once more.

“Carlos has started this week to join us slowly – that’s the first part, the easy one,” Poyet said.

“Then he will get destroyed by the fitness coach, Antonio Pintus! I’m sure he won’t enjoy that, but Carlos is a good character and he will go through it in a good manner.”

Sunderland's head coach has a strong squad to choose from ahead of tomorrow night's game against Stoke, with only goalkeeper Keiren Westwood on the long-term injury list.
