Poyet thrilled with Craig's super-strike

Head coach aware of midfielder’s talent.

Gus Poyet says his side boast a real goal threat if they can work Craig Gardner into shooting positions.

Gardner revelled in an attacking midfield role during the 1-0 win over Southampton and scoring the winning goal with a super strike from the edge of the box four minutes into the second period.

And supplying the midfielder in the right areas of the field was a key part of Poyet’s approach to the game as his side came out on top in their fourth clash with the Saints this season.

“We asked him to do a few things and he did them perfectly – we know he’s got that in his locker, we just wanted him to have the chance to have a few opportunities,” Poyet said.

“If you want Craig to score goals from that distance you need to put him there two or three times per game, not once every now and then.

“Today, we found him two or three times, he tried, one from a free-kick that we played quick, one for the goal and then he nearly had one with his left foot.

“He’s got some qualities that can be very, very special.”
