Boss outlines attacking mindset ahead of game in North London.
Gus Poyet wants to take an attacking outlook into Saturday’s game at Arsenal and doesn’t intend to sit back against Arsene Wenger’s high-flyers.
Sunderland will come up against the top flight’s meanest home defence this weekend, with the Gunners having conceded just six goals at the Emirates Stadium this season.
We need to be good on the ball, share possession with an attitude to attack and make their most skilful players go back and defend
- Gus Poyet
Poyet’s side haven’t lost away from home in the Barclays Premier League since November and the Uruguayan is keen to see his side go out and express themselves.
“It’s a great game for us – a great opportunity to do something important in the league,” he said.
“We will go there with no fear, to play our game, try to make things difficult for Arsenal and hopefully be the surprise of the day.”
Arsenal, who faced Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, trail league leaders Chelsea by just a point.
And Poyet says it's vital that his side give the Gunners’ attacking players something to think about defensively.
“Firstly, we need to be very organised,” he said. “It’s a big pitch and they have plenty of quality.
“Then we need to be good on the ball, share possession with an attitude to attack and make their most skilful players go back and defend.
I just want to make sure we go to the Emirates with character
- Poyet on Arsenal test
“To do that, we have to be very good. We have to expect them to press well, to use their ability to pin us back. We can’t just lose the ball and give them another chance to attack.
“We must be good on the ball, brave on the ball and good on the break.
“I think we’ve been good this season in those terms, especially away from home. I’m hoping we have a good day as a group.
“If we play in a similar way to last weekend with the ball I think we will have a great chance to get some points from the game.”
Poyet concluded: “I just want to make sure we go to the Emirates with character. I want to see the players playing there like they did at Old Trafford.”
