Poyet full of praise for debutant.

Gus Poyet hailed the impact of Will Buckley following Sunderland’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion winger made his Black Cats bow in front of a bumper crowd at the Stadium of Light, and he didn’t disappoint as he dazzled on the wing against the Red Devils.

Speaking to safc.com, Poyet reflected on a deserved point against Louis van Gaal’s side, whilst hailing the team’s shift in mentality over the past 12 months.

“We talked about the mentality of the team last week and we can talk about this again.

“If we had played this game last year at 1-0 at the beginning of the season we would probably have lost two or 3-0, but the team didn’t suffer and didn’t get nervous.”

He added: “We kept playing and it was exciting to watch Will Buckley on the right side, the fans are going to love him.”

Poyet continued by expanding on his relationship with Buckley, praising his desire to improve and the option he provides.

“I know him [Will Buckley] well and I know how much he improved during my two years at Brighton.

“He knows what we want from him and he’s such a professional that he will listen to you and do it to his best, and, when it is on a good day like today, it is going to be difficult for the opposition to cope with his pace.”

“We need to use him better and I was trying to convince the players to stop passing the ball to him, it was all about Buckley, Buckley, Buckley, but the idea is that we have got great options; we have Johnson who can threaten in a certain way and Buckley who can in a different way.”
