Head coach says Bardsley has opportunity.
New Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet says he will give Phil Bardsley a chance to return to first-team duty.
The defender is yet to feature at senior level this season but has made a number of appearances for the development squad since returning from the summer break.
Bardsley is fit and available and Poyet says he will be considered for selection going forward.
“I think the message for everybody is that I made a decision – with my staff, the club and with Phil – that we will give him a chance,” Poyet told the press.
“It’s up to him now. We ask everyone – especially the fans – for the next few weeks to forget about everything that happened, if they can, and let’s give him a chance because he can be very important for us.”
He added: “I’m open to giving him a chance, of course after checking and knowing everything that happened before.
“We’ll see how he reacts – I hope he can be one of the best players.”
