Supersub on derby winner: "I knew it was going in".
Fabio Borini confided in team-mate Vito Mannone before the Wear-Tyne derby against Newcastle that he felt he’d score – and went on to do just that.
As soon as I hit it I didn’t even look at the goal, I just went straight for the shot and I knew it was going in
- Fabio Borini
Borini climbed off the bench midway through the second half and netted a dramatic winner six minutes from time, firing home from just outside the box.
The goal sealed a 2-1 win for Sunderland, who had taken the lead through Steven Fletcher before Mathieu Debuchy equalised.
Certainly with the importance of the goal it would be in my top five, for sure,” Borini told SAFSee afterwards.
“As soon as I hit it I didn’t even look at the goal, I just went straight for the shot and I knew it was going in because you can feel it.
“I said to Vito [Mannone] before the game that I could feel [I was going to score] and then it happened!
“When you’re a striker and you feel a goal it’s something that you can’t explain – you just feel it.”
He added: “It means a lot for every single one of us; every single person at the club.”
