Cuellar's relief at win

Sunday’s game a big boost to everyone, says Carlos.

Defender Carlos Cuellar heaved a huge sigh of relief following the victory over Newcastle United at the weekend.

The Spaniard, who was part of the Sunderland team that ran out victorious against Newcastle at St James’ Park back in April, admitted both games were great occasions, but nothing can beat winning on home turf.

“A home win is fantastic,” Cuellar told, “And it’s great to get such an important victory in front of our fans.

“I’m so happy for them - we’ve won our first game of the season and what a game to do it in!”

The 2-1 triumph over local rivals Newcastle United lifted Sunderland from the foot of the Barclays Premier League and a point above manager-less Crystal Palace.

Cuellar believes both the derby victory and three points are just as important as each other and hopes the team can build on that vital win:

“It’s one step forward for us. The three points are very important and getting them from your rivals is a big confidence boost.

“We played better than we have been; we pressed forward, created chances and that is something we need to do a lot more of.

“We need start believing in ourselves and play with confidence to get ourselves out of the situation that we are in.”

The former Aston Villa man heaped praise on the bumper crowd at the Stadium of Light, who created an electric atmosphere that lifted the players throughout the clash.

“The main thing for me was the atmosphere today.” Cuellar added.

“I think it’s the best I’ve known, the supporters were unbelievable for us, especially considering the situation that we are in.

“That result will give us a big lift.”
