Flashback: Home win over Saints

Phillips double secures win over Southampton.

Kevin Phillips scored twice as Sunderland moved third in the Premiership with a 2-0 win over Southampton at the Stadium of Light.

Phillips took his tally for the season to 19, making him the Premiership’s leading marksman, though he should have made it 20, and recorded his hat-trick, only to miss an 82nd-minute penalty.

The Black Cats opened the scoring on the half-hour when Niall Quinn gathered a flick-on from a Michael Gray free-kick and pushed the ball to Phillips, who muscled through the visitors' defence to score.

Stefan Schwarz went close to doubling the hosts’ advantage when his swerving strike from 20 yards went just wide.

Eight minutes from time Phillips had the opportunity to grab his second and put the match beyond doubt. Lundekvam felled him inside the area, but Saints keeper Neil Moss knocked Phillips’ low, right-sided spot-kick away.

Kevin Kilbane, on his Sunderland debut, set up Phillips for goal number 19 of the season with a cross in from the left that Quinn nodded towards the far post for his strike partner to convert.

The win was the Black Cats’ third on the bounce and put an end to a three-game losing run against Southampton.
