Goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has been impressed with Sunderland’s pre-season preparations so far.

The Irish international was part of the Black Cats squad that made the trip to Hong Kong to play in the Barclays Asia Trophy.

The travelling party included Paolo Di Canio’s newest recruits and Westwood believes the new boys are bedding in nicely.

He told safc.com: “There are a lot of new signings in the squad and we’re evolving to the way the manager wants us to play.

“The lads who were here when he arrived last season know what he expects from us. Now it’s up to the new players to get up to speed.”

Di Canio made seven changes in each of the games in Hong Kong, to give as many players as he could the chance to get some game time under their belts, Cabral and David Moberg Karlsson were also able to get their names on the score sheet in the win over Tottenham.

“The new players have done really well,” Westwood continued.

“Cabral impressed me against Spurs and I think Jozy [Altidore] will make an impact.

“We maybe looked a bit leggy against City, but the team gave there all and that’s all that can be asked.”
