Another new face arrives on Wearside.
Paolo Di Canio’s squad for the 2013-14 season continues to take shape with the addition of FC Basel’s Cabral.
The midfielder, whose full name is Adilson Tavares Varela, has signed a three-year deal at the Stadium of Light.
Cabral, 24, hails from Praia in Cape Verde but holds Swiss citizenship and is a four-time winner of the country’s top division.
He began his career with Swiss club Lausanne Sport before joining Basel in 2007 and winning a league and cup double in his first season.
In 2008-09, Cabral made 23 appearances during a loan spell with Spanish side Sevilla Atletico and established himself as a key player upon his return to Switzerland.
He played 21 games during Basel’s Double-winning 2009-10 season, while the following campaign brought another league title and a string of impressive performances in the Champions League.
Cabral was again a central figure in another title win last season and helped Basel piece together a fine run in the Europa League, where they reached the semi-finals before being eliminated by Chelsea.
