Boss: Star keeper has great determination.
Martin O’Neill says Simon Mignolet’s modest nature masks a burning desire to continue improving his game.
The big Belgian picked up the North East Football Writers’ player of the year award at Ramside Hall last Sunday, with manager O’Neill amongst the invited guests.
Mignolet has enjoyed an excellent campaign so far and has established himself as one of the Barclays Premier League’s top stoppers.
O’Neill says the award is deserved and feels the sky is the limit in terms of Mignolet’s potential.
“Over the calendar year I’m not sure anyone deserved it more than Simon,” he said.
“It’s great for him. He’s such a modest fellow but he’s got that inner [drive].
“That modest outward appearance belies a gritty determination.
“He is on an upward path and, if he stays clear of injury, there is no telling what he could be.”
