Yorke and John win it back in '07.
3 March 2007
Goals from Dwight Yorke and Stern John extended Sunderland’s unbeaten start to 2007 to ten league games as Roy Keane’s men went on to lift the Championship title.
The Black Cats ended the hosts own eight-match unbeaten run and put a dent in the Baggies promotion push.
It took just 23 minutes for Yorke to give Sunderland the lead, John’s pass was perfect for the former Manchester United man to run on and finish in vintage style.
The lead was doubled just after half-time when Dean Whitehead crossed to the back post and John was allowed the free header that sent the travelling support into raptures.
Second-half substitute Darren Carter pulled back a late consolation for Albion who went on to finish 12 points behind Sunderland in fourth place – losing out in the playoff final to Derby County.
Sunderland: Ward, Simpson, Evans, Nosworthy, Collins, Edwards (Hysen, 41), Whitehead, Yorke (Miller, 73), Stokes, Connolly, John (Murphy, 62).
Subs Not Used: Fulop, Leadbitter.
