Spanish full-back joins on loan.

Sunderland AFC have confirmed that Fiorentina defender Marcos Alonso will join the club from Wednesday 1 January until the end of the season.

The 23-year old started his career with Spanish giants Real Madrid, before spending three years in England with Bolton Wanderers, winning the Trotters’ Player of the Season for the 2012-13 campaign.

The former Spanish U19 defender then moved to Fiorentina last summer, making eight appearances for the Italian club.

Sunderland Head Coach Gus Poyet said: “Marcos is a player that I have known well for a very long time. He was desperate to come and play for Sunderland and he is a player I am excited to work with.”

Alonso could make his Black Cats debut in the FA Cup with Budweiser Third Round tie against Carlisle United next Sunday.
