Midfielder heaps praise on red and white army.

Craig Gardner paid tribute to the Black Cats fans that made the trip to the south coast to watch Sunderland face Southampton at the weekend.

Around 2,000 of the red and white army packed the away end at St Mary’s Stadium, making the 700 mile round trip.

After the game, Gardner was quick to thank the fans for their backing.

“There were 2,000 there and they got right behind us, they were unbelievable and sung their hearts out all game.

Gardner explained: “Hopefully they understand that we did have a game plan today and we came away with a result.

“We’ve got the cup game with MK Dons on Tuesday night and it would be great to get a run in the cup and great for the fans.”
