Jones goal seals win in 2009.
Kenwyne Jones celebrated signing a new contract with the Black Cats as he bagged the winner in Sunderland’s last victory over Fulham at the Stadium of Light in January 2009.
Jones’ 55th-minute strike secured the points for Ricky Sbragia’s Sunderland who won their first league game since the Scot took charge on a permanent basis.
Djibirl Cisse went close to opening the scoring after six minutes but he fired his shot against the post from the edge of the area.
Simon Davies lacked composure in the 20th minute when he pulled Fulham’s best opportunity of the half wide.
Cisse, always a willing runner, was not alert enough to place a shot past a sliding John Pantsil after Mark Schwarzer had parried a Jones shot into his path in the 35th minute.
Sunderland were much improved after the restart and after Cisse’s shot, from Andy Reid’s cross, was well saved by Schwarzer, Jones was on hand to drive home the follow-up.
Steed Malbranque produced a moment of quality on the hour only for Schwarzer to match the effort with a smart save.
Fulham’s best chance to equalise fell to Davies who inexplicably shot over after Clint Dempsey had nodded down to him in the six-yard box.
Malbranque went close to doubling the lead in the final stages before Zamora failed to test Marton Fulop with an unmarked header at the back post.
