Goal scorer delighted to get win for fans.
Winger Adam Johnson believes Sunderland’s derby-day victory over Newcastle United is just reward for the red and white army after their tremendous backing throughout the season.
Johnson netted Sunderland’s second goal in the memorable 3-0 triumph at St James' Park and admits the only fans the players could hear on the pitch were the 2,500 Black Cats fans that were sat high up in the Leazes End.
“You could hear our fans much more than the home crowd,” Johnson commented “We silenced them.”
The win is Sunderland's first on Tyneside since Niall Quinn and Don Hutchison fired Sunderland to victory back in 2000.
“It’s great to get the win and give them something back after their fantastic support," Johnson continued.
“I’m sure every one of them will have a great night tonight and it’s fully deserved.”
