‘He wants to make his players feel like they’re the best.’

Adam Johnson says new head coach Paolo Di Canio is infusing fresh confidence into his squad.

The charismatic Italian has had a big impact in his first week on Wearside and has spent a considerable amount of time on the training ground with his players.

“He’s a confident manager and wants to make his players feel like they’re the best players in the world,” the winger explained.

I think he’s going to get the best out of the lads. He demands your best and we will have to work hard

“When players are full of confidence they’re going to play well, so hopefully we can take that into Sunday [at Chelsea] because it’s a tough game and a big game.”

Di Canio has had just a week to prepare for Sunday’s game at Stamford Bridge but is wasting no time in stamping his blueprint on the squad’s preparation.

And Johnson says the players have been left in little doubt as to his expectations.

“It’s been a lot different,” he explained. “Everyone is still getting used to it but it’s so far so good, really.

“I think he’s going to get the best out of the lads. He demands your best and we will have to work hard.

“It’s probably what we need. Everyone is excited and can’t wait to play.”

And while the adjustment process continues, Johnson says the new head coach’s energy on the training ground and beyond has most certainly shined through.

“He’s full of enthusiasm and energy,” he said. “If you do well for him he’s going to be a great boss to play for.

“I think any time a new manager comes in everything happens so quickly and it’s on top of you.

“It’s difficult coming in just a week before a game and the gaffer is trying to get his points across.

“It’s a lot to take in all at once but come Sunday I think we will know what he wants from us.”
