Graham looking to maintain momentum

by Stuart Vose

Striker on confidence, derby win and Everton.

Danny Graham says confidence is high in the Sunderland camp but is under no illusions that his side have to keep the momentum going.

Graham returned to the starting line-up for the derby at Newcastle and impressed in Sunderland’s 3-0 win.

Now the former Swansea man says it’s vital Paolo Di Canio’s side continue to pick up points having moved above Stoke and Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier League table.

“Obviously the result was superb and the performance was very good, but we need to build on that,” he said.

“We don’t want to go and beat our rivals 3-0 and then lose to Everton.

“Regardless of who we were playing it was a massive three points, we hadn’t won in a while so to get a win like that and to win 3-0 has given everyone massive confidence.”

Stephane Sessegnon netted his sixth goal of the season in the win on Tyneside, while Adam Johnson and David Vaughan also got on the scoresheet.

Sunderland’s attacking raids saw a number of players getting forward and Graham relished the chance to play at the fulcrum of the attack.

“I thought that was the best game I’ve had in a Sunderland shirt so far,” he explained.

“I was delighted with the performance but most of all delighted with the three points.

“It’s given everyone massive confidence and filled everyone with belief again.

“I think you could see when we attacked we had numbers in the box and when we attack in numbers we look like we are going to score when we go forward.”

Now he’s relishing the next test – this Saturday's visit of an Everton side who are enjoying an excellent campaign.

“They are a very good team; David Moyes has them well organised and they’re having another terrific season again,” he said.

“It’s going to be tough but we need to worry about ourselves and take our performance from Sunday into Saturday’s game.”
