A closer look at Sunderland's new head coach.

Paolo Di Canio was unveiled as Sunderland manager this past weekend.

The charismatic Italian takes the helm at the Stadium of Light following a very colourful career.

Di Canio began his playing career in Serie A.  He spent time with Lazio, Juventus, Napoli and Milan, before a brief spell in Scotland with Celtic.

The forward then made his move to the Premier League, where he had two seasons with Sheffield Wednesday and enjoyed a five year stint with West Ham United. Di Canio also had a season at Charlton Athletic, before returning to Italy in 2004 to play for Lazio and Cisco Roma.

At 40 year-old, Di Canio retired in 2008; he entered football management three years later guiding Swindon Town to promotion in his first full season as manager.
