More from Di Canio on derby win.
Paolo Di Canio cut a muddy figure in his post-match interviews following his derby exertions on the touchline.
Sunderland’s head coach was interviewed with mud patches on his knees following a sliding celebration as the Black Cats roared to a 3-0 win over rivals Newcastle.
I would pay, out of my own pocket, every weekend for a new pair of trousers if we win or get results like that!

“I ran for 20 yards and then I fell down!” Di Canio said. “It was such a pleasure to see the fans celebrate, I know what it means to them.
“I would pay, out of my own pocket, every weekend for a new pair of trousers if we win or get results like that!”
Di Canio also hailed the quality of his side’s goals but was equally pleased with the defensive work on show as Newcastle piled on the pressure either side of half time.
Now he’s looking to build on a “perfect result” over the course of the final five games of the campaign.
“I know this game will go down in history – but it will be even more important if we build on this and climb up the table,” he said.
“We remained very disciplined throughout the game and absorbed pressure from Newcastle.
“There were some moments where they could have scored but we did very well to not let that happen.
“My players were warriors today; they deserved to win 3-0. It’s a perfect result.”
