Martin O'Neill

MON on "solid" start

Boss looking to build.

Martin O’Neill says Sunderland will continue to make progress as his side look to build on their unbeaten start to the campaign.

The Black Cats have drawn all three of their league games so far as well as registering a victory in the Capital One Cup.

“It’s a solid start,” O’Neill said. “By the time we play our sixth game, at Manchester City, we will have played two at home and four away.

“We have had two tough away games so far as well as the home game with Liverpool.

“The team will get stronger and fitter and we will maybe have the addition of Adam Johnson coming back.”

The Stadium of Light chief has watched back the 1-1 draw with Liverpool, which has reinforced his post-match view that a point was a fair result.

“I felt we gave as good as we got in the first half and Liverpool found it difficult to break us down,” he said.

“As an attacking force we lost momentum in the second half and surrendered the initiative. We didn’t really get it back.

“Maybe that was a little disappointing, although conceding the goal was more so.

“Having watched the game back I think we were worthy of a point, but it would have been harsh on Liverpool had we taken all three.”
