Defender relishing first game at SoL.
Carlos Cuellar is counting down the hours until he can step out at the Stadium of Light for the first time.
If selected, the likeable Spaniard will make his home debut for Sunderland against Liverpool this weekend.
The former Aston Villa defender joined the Black Cats over the summer and played a key role in the draws at Arsenal and Swansea.
Now he’s looking forward to getting acquainted with the red and white army as Martin O’Neill’s side prepare for their first home league game of the season.
I am really excited and looking forward to playing in front of the home fans for the first time.
- Carlos Cuellar
“I am really excited and looking forward to playing in front of the home fans for the first time,” Cuellar said.
“It will be a tough game against a top team. They want to win, we want to win; it will be a good game.
“As a player you always want to play in front of the home fans. You feel better playing at home.
“I think the fans can be excited about what we have here. We have a good, strong team who can play against anyone. We can have a good year.”
Boss O’Neill has reshaped his side over the summer, bringing in Louis Saha, Steven Fletcher, Adam Johnson and Danny Rose as well as Cuellar.
Cuellar says the Black Cats will be looking to use their new attacking resources this weekend but insists the focus on defensive solidity must remain.
“We still have to defend all the same – all the team attacking, all the team defending, always,” he said.
“When you are playing at home the game will be a little bit open, but we know how to approach the game.“We have to attack but be strong at the back too.”
