Danny Rose

MON: Rose is blooming

Loanee thriving on Wearside, says boss.

Martin O’Neill believes Danny Rose is getting better and better as he continues to bed in on Wearside.

The on-loan Spurs defender shone during the 1-0 win over Wigan last weekend as Sunderland continued their unbeaten start to the season.

Rose, who joined the Black Cats back in August, has now featured in Sunderland’s last four games and O’Neill believes regular football is just what the England under-21 star needs.

And he feels there’s still more to come from him, particularly on the attacking side as Rose develops his understanding with wing ace James McClean.

“Danny is improving as he gets fitter,” he said. “Having not played for a while for Tottenham Hotspur, he’s now getting a run of games and his fitness is improving.

“I’ve been very pleased with him. He’s good at getting forward and helping James out on the left.

“He is still just bedding into the team so doesn’t always take the chances to burst forward, but defensively he’s been sound and I’m delighted with that.”

Meanwhile O’Neill believes that star striker Steven Fletcher could slot into any attacking line-up following a goal-filled start to the campaign.

The frontman has scored with all five of his shots on target so far this season and was on the mark again with the winning goal against Wigan.

“That’s five goals for Fletcher now - he’s our only scorer at the moment which is something we’re hoping to rectify,” O’Neill said.

“He’s been magnificent; the crowd have taken to him and rightly so. He looks as though he could play for anybody in this Barclays Premier League.”
