Irish joy but defeats for Scots and Welsh.

The Republic of Ireland recovered from a heavy defeat from Germany with a comprehensive away win in the Faroe Islands yesterday.

John O’Shea played the entire game while David Meyler made a cameo appearance as a 90th-minute substitute.

Marc Wilson opened the scoring in Torshavn just after the break before Jon Walters made it 2-0.

The Faroes halved the deficit but an own goal and a late strike from Darren O’Dea sealed the win for the Irish.

Giovanni Trapattoni’s side are now third in Group C with six points from three games.

Midfielder David Vaughan got a full 90 minutes under his belt as Chris Coleman’s Wales were beaten 2-0 in Croatia.

Mario Mandzukic opened the scoring just before the half-hour, and Eduardo doubled the lead from close range 13 minutes into the second half.

Elsewhere, Striker Steven Fletcher featured for Scotland as they lost out to Belgium in Brussels.

The visitors were under heavy pressure from the off but kept their hosts at bay until Christian Benteke finally broke through in the 69th-minute.

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany then added a quick-fire second goal to leave the Scots bottom of Group A with four games played.

Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was an unused substitute for the Belgians.
