AJ looking to push on

Winger targeting strong run.

Adam Johnson is looking to put his spell on the sidelines behind him and tie down a regular spot for Sunderland.

The winger picked up an injury on international duty and was rated as doubtful for the Wigan game only to pass a late fitness test.

Johnson came through with no ill effects as Sunderland won 1-0 to continue their unbeaten start to the season, which now stands at seven games.

And the former Manchester City man is looking to push on and impress having only joined the club in August.

“Hopefully we can go on a strong run now,” he said. “Confidence is high – we’re looking good in the league and we want to push on.

“I want to put my injuries behind me. I hadn’t really been right since the Swansea game and I was trying to push to get back.

“That’s behind me now. I’ve never had injuries during my career really and it’s unfortunate that I had one or two just after I signed.”

Johnson was given a huge welcome by the Stadium of Light on his home league debut and the fans’ adulation certainly left its mark.

“The fans gave me a great reception, just as they did when I came on against MK Dons,” he said.

“It’s great to be playing in front of people who want you to play.”
