The midfielder is in his third season as Sunderland’s captain and is more than happy to be a part of a club he feels is moving in the right direction.
“I’m delighted to have signed the new deal,” said Cattermole, who is 20 appearances short of a century of games for the club.
“The gaffer made it clear at the end of last season that he wanted me at the club and I’m glad to get it done.
“If you look at the signings we’ve made over the summer, I think it shows the club’s ambition. I think this is the best place for me.”
Meanwhile Cattermole believes the squad are just a dash of confidence away from motoring up the Barclays Premier League.
Sunderland have taken nine points from their first eight games but have lost just once, to reigning champions Manchester City.
“It’s a tough league and four of our first six games were away from home,” he said.
“Plus we’ve just been to Stoke which is always a tough place to go.
“With the players we’ve got I don’t think we are going to struggle to win games – it just takes a bit of confidence.
“Once we win a couple of games I think you’ll really see the team progressing.”
